CHAPTER 6 SOLIDS

                       Chemical Question 4-1          TOP-KISO

I Describe the bonding present in solid aluminum. Explain why aluminum is a conductor of electricity.

                             Answer

II Aluminum combines readily with both dry fluorine and dry chlorine. Anhydrous aluminum chloride is a white solid which sublimes at about 200℃, it reacts with water and dissolves in non-polar solvent. Aluminum fluoride is a crystalline solid up to a temperature in excess of 1290℃; it is insoluble in nono-polar solvents.

 i Suggest, using the information above, the name of the bond type present in;

                   anhydrous aluminum chloride

                   anhydrous aluminum fluoride.

                             Answer

 ii Give an explanation for the difference in bond type present in the two anhydrous aluminum hydrides.

                             Answer

 iii Exyplain why the bonding in anhydrous aluminum fluoride leads to a high melting temperature.

                             Answer
